The Strange Appeal of Tori and Dean

Published by jorty at 10:10 am under reality TV Edit This

Tori Spelling and Dean McDermottThe Oxygen Network’s latest reality show, Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, follows actress Tori Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott as they prepare for the arrival of their second baby and look for a new home in Hollywood.

I wanted to hate this show. Believe me. I was never a big Tori Spelling fan.  She’s Aaron Spelling’s daughter, so I always thought her gig on Beverly Hills 90210 happened just because she was daddy’s girl. I never bothered to pay attention to her acting ability. And frankly, when the tabloids splashed news that she left her first husband for McDermott (and he left his first wife and child for her too) I was more than a little turned off.

But something about Tori and Dean’s reality show—and the “realness” of it, struck me. It seems honest. It seems like a real reality show. I first caught these two last season on their show “Tori and Dean: Inn Love”.  That show, about the couple’s attempt to start a bed and breakfast business, had a certain appeal as well. But “Home Sweet Hollywood” seems  to be a better fit.

When Dean’s latest passion, scuba diving, causes tension between the couple, Tori admits its because Dean has a hot, young, female scuba instructor.  She comes right out and says “He cheated on his first wife with me, how do I know he won’t do it to me too.” Ah, the lament of the Other Woman! Tori has nailed it. And that’s why I like this show. No problems are swept under the carpet. Spelling even addresses her much-publicized rift with her mother.

You can check out “Tori and Dean”: Home Sweet Hollywood” Tuesday nights on The Oxygen Network. Check it out even if you aren’t a Tori Spelling fan. You may just become one.
