Can Heath Ledger Possibly Win an Oscar?
Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker in the summertime Batman flick “The Dark Knight” is already creating Oscar buzz. Or is it? While diehard Ledger fans are hoping to see him get a posthumous Academy Award nod, industry insiders say it’s way to early for such talk. And highly unlikely, as well.
It is extremely rare for an actor to be recognized by the Academy after his or her death. In fact, it has only happened one time, to actor Peter Finch for his role in the 1976 film, “Network”. And campy comic strip movies like “The Dark Knight” are not the kind of films that usually get the attention of Oscar voters.
While Oscar insiders are dismissing the Oscar buzz, critics have hailed Ledger’s performance in “The Dark Knight” as mesmerizing. Even if he doesn’t get a Supporting Actor nomination, Ledger’s final film proves what a great actor he really was.
