Popcultured Blast From the Past: Saturday Morning Cartoons

Published by jorty at 7:40 am under classic TV, pop culture Edit This

Back in the 1970’s, Saturday morning cartoons were an event.  By late summer, television networks would air prime time specials devoted to the upcoming fall season of cartoons.

Some of the most memorable cartoons  included “Scooby’s All Star Laff A’lympics”, “Hong Kong Phooey”, “Speed Buggy”, “aaaaa.jpgThe Groovy Ghoulies , “Superfriends”, “Goober and the Ghost Chasers” and  “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids” (which ran for an incredible 12 years!).

There were also live action shows, many of them created by the dynamic duo of Sid and Marty Krofft, like “Land of the Lost”, “Sigmond and the Sea Monsters”, “H.R. Pufnstuf” “Shazam”  and “Isis”.

Another popular trend was cartoon versions of popular TV series of the time. The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, Gilligan’s Island, I Dream of Jeannie, The Osmonds and the Jackson 5 all had cartoon spinoffs.

The kids of today have a lot of things we never  had—like the Internet , video game systems, cell phones and cable TV. But in my opinion you just can’t beat the Saturday mornings of the 1970’s!
