Popcultured Blast from the Past: Lisa Whelchel

I’ve had a renewed interest in actress Lisa Whelchel lately. You may remember her from “The New Mickey Mouse Club”  in the late 1970’s and the sitcom “The Facts of Life” in the 80’s. Lisa played  Blair Warner on “Facts”, a rich, snobby private school girl who liked to boast and generally make life miserable for her nemesis, Jo (played by Nancy McKeon).

After a successful career as a child star, Lisa Welchel virtually faded from the Hollywood spotlight in the 1990’s. She did the obligatory “Love Boat” episodes and a couple “Facts of Life” reunion shows and movies, but she mostly gave up her acting career to become a stay at home homeschool mom to her 3 children.

I stumbled upon this “fact” of Whelchel‘s life when I was doing some research on homeschooling for my own kids. Whelchel has published several books—all very Christian-themed — about homeschooling, child discipline, mommyhood  and how the Lord guides her life.

I like Lisa. I don’t think she comes off too preachy and it’s refreshing to see a child star stay grounded and have a normal, adult life.

Now does anybody know how’s Tootie doing?
